Secured by ABS & MAS Core Regulations (June 2026 update)

WTF is this real? What actually happened?

Yes, this is 100% real. On June 6, 2026, Singapore's Association of Banks (ABS) terminated the custom PayNow "Nickname" feature. Over 30% of Singaporeans used customizable aliases (like "giga chad", "scubaaaaa", or personal branding) to receive payments.

Why was it banned? Scammers were exploiting nicknames by setting their aliases to names of legitimate companies (e.g., "SP Services", "LTA Penalty Office") or trusted mutual friends, scamming victims into authorizing massive transfers.

Why the letter 'X'? ABS and the major banks stated that legacy bank mainframes, processing terminals, and backend databases (across 29 different financial institutions) could not support special characters like asterisks (*), dashes (-), or blank spaces within the masked string. Therefore, capital "X" was declared the standard fallback character.

The Hilarious Consequence: Because of Singapore's rich diversity in Chinese dialect, Malay, and Tamil names (e.g., "See", "Wee", "Foo", "Kok"), truncation combined with masking resulted in names spelling out things like JERXXX SEX WEX LOXX, inducing widespread local hilarity and online memes!
